SO WHAT DOES THE FAN KIT REALLY DO?

Many people believe that the fan kit serves as a “projection” blower, much like a force air furnace or hair dryer. In fact, the fan is designed to gently circulate room air through the air chamber of the fireplace. The resulting airflow may feel insignificant to you if you put your hand in front of the upper grill. This is normal and it is not an indication of a problem. Many people also become concerned because the air flow cannot be felt across the entire length of the grill. This is also normal. There are two ninety degree turns as well as a large chimney that are located in the air chamber. These obstructions tend to deflect the circulating air and prevent it from exiting out the entire length of the grill.

WHAT CAN I DO TO INCREASE THE AIR FLOW OR HEAT?

We have listed a few tips on the operation of your circulating fan which should increase your enjoyment of the fireplace.

1. When building a fire, use a minimum of four pieces of well seasoned hardwood.

2. Allow the fire to burn with the fireplace glass doors closed for a minimum of 45 minutes before turning on the fan. This will allow the heat to build up in the hearth, and assist in contributing hot air to the living space more rapidly.

3. Set the speed control for the fan at the medium setting. This will keep the temperature in the air chamber high and increase the heat input. Fan speed controls may be purchased through our showroom sales office.

4. For the highest heat output, keep the glass doors on your fireplace closed with the outside air control in the open position.

5. If you have gas logs, the heat output will be lower than that of a wood fire due to lower combustion temperature.

MY FAN MAKES A LOT OF NOISE. WHAT CAN I DO?

If the noise is a “whirring” sound, this is normal. If you are hearing a clicking noise, there is the possibility of an obstruction. Be sure to disconnect the unit from the electrical outlet, before examining the unit. Follow the procedures outlined in your fan kit manual for removing the unit. If you are unable to complete this procedure, please complete the enclosed Service Authorization form for a service call.

You can also purchase a fan speed control to control the amount of “whirring” noise heard. By dialing the control down you will decrease the revolutions, thereby decreasing the amount of noise. Fan speed controls are available through our showroom.

We hope this letter has answered some of your questions and concerns. We also would like to add that your decision to purchase a fan kit was a wise one. Although not measurable by the human hand, there are distinct temperature increases per hour in units with a fan kit versus units utilizing radiant heat.
