| We have been notified that you are experiencing some cold air infiltration in
the area of the fireplace. We have written this letter so that you can assist us
in identifying the cause and possible solution to your situation. |
| |
| Your professionally installed fireplace system complies with the rigorous
specifications of BOCA, UL and the manufacturer. The fireplace and chimney has
been installed by our certified installers and has been inspected and approved
by the local building department. The fireplace does not, in itself, create cold
air. |
| |
|
SO WHERE IS THE COLD AIR ORIGINATING?
|
| |
| Your first check is to locate your damper handle. If your damper is open, close
it now. (Please note that if a gas log is being used in a wood burning
pre-manufactured fireplace, the damper clamp will prevent complete closing of
the damper. This is normal.) Next, locate the outside air control. If this is
open, close it now. |
| |
|
IF THESE EFFORTS DO NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM, READ ON!
|
| |
| Is the outside air damper stuck in the open position? This can be checked by
completely covering the vent cap outside your house. If the cold airflow stops,
then return the enclosed Service Authorization form attention the Williams Panel
Brick Customer Care Group. You will be contacted to arrange for service. |
| |
| Are there any gaps between the drywall and the fireplace, or between the
fireplace and the marble surround? Have you checked between the fireplace and
the hearth extension? Are their gaps between the fireplace and masonry surround,
or behind the masonry? To test these areas, light a match, and slowly move it
around the perimeter of the fireplace opening. If the flame is blown out or
flickers, a high temperature caulk, or additional mortar should be applied to
the area at fault. Approved high temperature caulk may be obtained from the
Williams Panel Brick Showroom. Please use the enclosed discount coupon. |
| |
| Another common area for infiltration may be the incoming gas line. Inspect the
inside refractory. Has the gas line been run through the knockout and sleeve
provided by the manufacturer? Shine a light through the holes on either side of
the fire to check for holes cut through the fireplace to run the gas line. If
you can see the gas line, then the plumber installed the gas line incorrectly.
You should contact the plumber to rectify this situation. |
| |
| Is the fireplace itself located in an unheated area of the house, or an
uninsulated outside chase? In cold weather, the fireplace will be significantly
colder than room temperature. In extreme cold it may seem that cold air is
flowing from the fireplace and the hearth extension. This is normal. Using your
fireplace is the best solution in this instance. Remember to keep the doors
closed. |
