Thank you for calling Williams Panel Brick regarding your fireplace. We understand that you are concerned about the flame level height in your fireplace. In order to prevent costly and unnecessary service trips by our technicians we would like you to assist us in trouble shooting the problem to determine possible causes.

Your professionally installed fireplace system complies with the rigorous specifications of BOCA, UL and the manufacturer. The fireplace and chimney have been installed by our certified installers and has been inspected and approved by the local building department.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

The flames from your fireplace should crest just above the logs with a yellow or orange tip with a blue base. Flames from gas fireplaces will vary, even among similar units, as a result of differing environmental situations. The appearance of the flames, even in identical fireplaces, will vary greatly from home to home.

BURNING TIME

Be sure to give your fireplace time to exhaust the air in the firebox. This takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes. Once the flames begin to burn out the air in the firebox, the fire will begin to seek additional air, and your flames will become longer. Given the proper the flames in your fireplace will become higher and more yellow. Keeping your pilot lit at all times will also help to cut the time necessary for the longer flames.

ADJUST THE POSITION OF VERMICULITE

By moving the vermiculite closer toward the burner you can allow the gas to travel more efficiently. However, be sure not to move the vermiculite into the burners.

CHECK THE AIR SHUTTER

Your unit comes from the factory preset to perform at the optimum efficiency to provide a balanced flame, and to avoid excessive sooting. To get higher flames, it may be necessary to close the air shutter. This may result in a sooting situation. If you do not wish to perform this procedure, please complete the enclosed Authorization Form to schedule your non-warranty service.

The air shutter is found on the bottom of the burner pan. You can adjust the air shutter by using a screwdriver of 1/4” wrench. Make incremental changes to avoid causing a sooting problem.

If your unit operates on natural gas, it should be 1/4” open to operate effectively. If you have an LP gas unit, the air shutter on your fireplace should be in the fully open position. Additionally, you should be aware that LP gas results in higher levels of carbon being generated than in natural gas units.

We hope this letter has been beneficial and answered your questions about our fireplace’s operation and safety. If you require additional assistance, please complete the enclosed Authorization Form to schedule service.
